Spring blue water report
We got started early this spring with some major tuna meat hauls to the BoomVang and Nansen Spars. On an April 26th trip to the Hoover/Dianna Spar we caught a ton of big black fin in the wee hours of the morning when we arrived, on knife jigs and chunks. Then, right at daylight, we moved just inside to a weed line and put out the spread. We were targeting billfish but we were not unhappy when we caught an 80 pound yellow fin around 9am. At noon we saw a blue crashing bait up ahead on the weed line so we plowed over to the action and hooked up on our second pass. Randy Bruner of Granbury, Texas landed his first blue ever; the fish was in the 300 pound range. May 4th proved to be another good sign of the blue water fishing ahead this summer. 70 miles out of POC (Port O’Connor), which is only an hour and a half run on a calm day, we hooked up on a big blue. Kyle Drushel of POC was on the reel and after a 35 minute battle, with some serious jumps from the blue; we had her boat side for some photos. I estimated her in the 400 pound range. The Wahoo bite is also heating up with hook ups coming from the Falcon area, Baker area, and some good rips and weed lines that have been forming up. There is a ton of grass out there which brings us lots of bait, so blue water fishing should be awesome this summer.
Thanks and tightlines,
Capt. Bill
